Bill 20 to Free Toronto from the OMB Passes Second Reading

Rosario Marchese’s bill, entitled Respect for Municipalities Act (City of Toronto), passed second reading in the Legislature, with support from members of all parties in the House. The bill now goes to the Finance and Economic Affairs Committee for further review.

Rosario would like to thank the many residents, from Trinity-Spadina and beyond, who came to the Legislature to support my bill. Not only did supporters fill up the entire members’ gallery on the opposition side of the house, supporters also filled up the government’s side as well.

These supporters included representatives from the York Quay Neighbourhood Association , the Trinity-Bellwoods Community Association, the Annex Residents’ Association, the Harbord Village Residents’ Association, the CityPlace Residents’ Association, the Fort York Residents’ Association, the Kensington Market Action Committee, the Kensington Market BIA, the Liberty Village BIA, and the West Queen West BIA.

The bill would not have come this far without such amazing community support. Thank you!

With the bill’s passage, the City of Toronto has taken a step towards freedom from the Ontario Municipal Board. But there is much more work to be done. The bill will not leave committee without the support of other parties. While enthusiastic support was provided by Liberal MPP Glen Murray, other members of his party are much more ambivalent. And while many Progressive Conservatives are eager to do away with some government agencies, they do not seem quite ready to cede power and authority to the sixth-largest government in Canada.

This bill needs your support. Please contact your MPP and tell them that you want to set Toronto free from the OMB. Please Rosario at rmarchese-qp@ndp.on.ca.

Here is the Hansard transcript of the debate.
